McLaren have revealed a new front bumper design for the 650S and called it the 675LT. Actually its all part of the product development cycle all auto companies follow.
When the MP4-12 was released in 2011 McLaren product managers, yes these people do exist, would have factored in a few model updates more power, trim upgrades faster gear shifts that sort of thing. These technical and engineering upgrades are pre-planned to keep up interest and therefore extend the product life cycle. Its all about sales people!
So how do they keep on getting more power? By deliberately setting the horsepower low through the use of the good old microchip. When the time comes to release a slightly more powerful version McLaren’s software engineers just ask the micro chip to release a few extra horsepower.
Although to be fair McLaren have reduced the weight by 100kg compared to the 650S and fitted new engine components, a titanium exhaust and more usage of carbon fiber does add power and reduce weight. You see less weight more power is better all round it makes everything more demonic.
The 675LT is essentially a new bumper design with more power to distinguish it self from its MP4-12C progenitor origins. McLaren do say its going to be a more extreme version of the standard 650S. It will also have a revised aerodynamic package that is said to produce 40 percent more downforce.
The 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 in the 675LT will produce 666bhp that’s 5bhp more than McLaren’s chief nemesis the Ferrari 488 GTB.
The 675LT will be as track focused as it it will be road legal, a step up from the 650S and you will also have to cough up more money but McLaren remains coy about the latter.
McLaren will reveal more details at the 2015 Geneva Motorshow on March 3rd.
