Do you think the Audi S8 lacks power? No didn’t think you did but Audi disagree and have launched the S8 Plus, a more powerful variant of the less powerful S8. More power for the S8 Plus means just that, more power, 85bhp than the ‘standard’ S8 which means the S8 Plus now generates 602bhp and a mammoth 700Nm of torque which is enough to wake the dead.
But if you thought the 4.0-litre twin-turbo spewing out 700Nm of torque was too much of a good thing, Audi will disagree with you again, an overboost function increases torque up to 750Nm which is enough to make first contact with an alien species 500 light years away from earth.
The S8 Plus is restricted to a top speed of 155mph, but Audi are being clever here and are selling an optional de-restricted package which the marketing call, ‘dynamic package’. Paying a premium will get you a 189mph executive express that is capable of hitting 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds.
Chassis highlights include S sports adaptive air suspension and dynamic steering, both of which have been tuned specifically for the S8 plus. UK specification models are fitted with 21-inch alloy wheels in a unique high-gloss black double-spoke design.
The full force of this prodigious output is transmitted to the road via an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. A sports differential apportions the torque between the rear wheels for optimum directional stability.
The standard dual-branch sports exhaust system opens out into two oval high-gloss black tailpipes on the left and right. It is modified by quattro GmbH and gives the S8 plus an unmistakable V8 sound.
Carbon fibre is also used on the flaps in the side air inlets and the blade on the front apron. The rear diffuser, Singleframe front grille, air inlets and window trims form part of the black styling package, as do the mirror housings.
Audi make some of the best interiors around, the S8 will be serious flagship luxury and fully loaded with whatever kit and technology the market currently offers. The price? £97,700 OTR, first UK deliveries are expected to commence in January 2016.
