Ron Dennis Believes Reducing Testing Doesn’t Reduce Costs
Formula One

With McLaren finally confirming Jenson Button to retain his drive for McLaren in 2016 a week ago McLaren F1 Chairman, Ron Dennis, has spoken of his frustration about testing regulation. Dennis believes reducing testing hasn’t reduced costs as was originally planned.

In a recent interview Dennis said costs have actually increased as many of the top teams channel their resources to dyno running, simulators and improved factory expenditure.

Dennis said: “I think the frustration I have personally with the regulations is that virtually everything that is designed to reduce costs has increased it.

“At the moment the regulations are extremely constraining.” added Dennis.

Dennis also added that a return to on track testing is much preferable. “I like to go testing. I would like to have freedom in wind tunnels. I would like to have freedom in CFD, because when you are uncompetitive you have to develop your way out of it.”

The McLaren Honda partnership has struggled to muster competitive performances so far this season, indeed it has been a dreadful display from one of the top teams on the grid.

At the last race in Singapore Alonso described the teams performance as an embarrassment over the radio as once again McLaren trailed at the back of the grid during the Grand Prix.

McLaren’s struggles have been down to the lack of cutting edge performance from the Honda engine. Honda have admitted their engine design concepts have not worked in 2015.

After a meeting with senior Honda officials in Tokyo Dennis reaffirmed that the partnership will succeed. “The way that you build relationships and achieve things together is by coming together and not going apart, and being transparent, and working together to solve the issues.” said Dennis.
