We were shocked to hear that Chevrolet even dared to offer a diesel… in a pickup truck but here it is the Chevrolet Colorado with a 2.8-litre Duramax turbo-diesel engine which generates 181 horsepower (135 kW) and 369 lb-ft of torque (500 Nm). Offering a diesel pickup to an American target market is like Barrack Hussein Obama offering a Presidential pardon to a white supremacist on death row. Diesels and Americans don’t mix like oil and water don’t mix. However when the 4WD model has an estimated combined economy of 29mpg then America sits up and takes notice. But the Colorado offers interesting technology like the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission, which uses a Centrifugal Pendulum Vibration Absorber in the torque converter to reduce powertrain noise and vibration. The Colorado will be available in 2WD and 4WD variants and America being a big place means you American’s cover vast distances as easily as a migrating whale. Fear not because the Colorado has a 21 gallon (95-litres) fuel tank which means the 2WD version can cover an estimated 651 miles per tank. American’s are building smarter vehicles these days for example the Colorado features diesel exhaust braking and an integrated trailer brake controller. Chevrolet claim the diesel exhaust braking enhances vehicle control and reduces brake wear by reducing the need for breaking on downgrades. The integrated trailer brake controller works with the antilock brake system to provide “immediate and measured brake force”. And to back up all this yankee-doodle flag waving hollering Chevrolet are confident in claiming the Colorado is America’s most fuel efficient pickup. Nevertheless the diesel Chevrolet Colorado will go on sale in US this fall and it will cost $3,730 more than a comparably equipped 3.6L V-6 model.
