F3 Drivers Live To Compete Another Day After Huge Crash
Video
The European F3 Championship was just another typical race as it entered round 4 of a 10 race Championship at Austria’s Spielberg circuit in Styria. For drivers Ryan Tveter, Pedro Piquet and Peter Zhi Cong Li it was anything but a normal race. Ryan Tveter had spun his car into a gravel trap and managed to rejoin the circuit but in the process left behind him a huge plume of dust. Chinese driver Zhi Cong Li came racing in at what appeared to be near racing speed and unsighted by the dust cloud rammed into the back of Tveter’s car which had stalled on track. The resulting crash was of monumental proportions the type of ridiculous crashes you see on video games such as GTA5 and not in the real world. A third driver, Pedro Piquet, smashed into Tveter’ car not soon after the first impact. Tveter managed to get out of the car and walk to the side of the track. Both Tveter and Zhi Cong Li were sent to hospital after the crash but both survived although Zhi Cong Li suffered a number of broken bones meaning his season is over. Piquet walked away unhurt. The FIA released a update: “A serious incident has occurred during Race 1 of Round 4 of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, involving car number 18 Zhi Cong Li (CHN), number 3 Ryan Tveter (USA) and number 5 Pedro Piquet (BRA).
Following on-track evaluation, Zhi Cong Li and Ryan Tveter were transferred to the circuit’s medical centre. One driver was initially unconscious, but both drivers were conscious on arrival at the medical centre. Zhi Cong Li has subsequently been taken to hospital via helicopter due to possible head and back injuries. Ryan Tveter was taken to hospital by ambulance for further examination”.
