Secrets from the Scrapyard: Stripping Your Car & Selling The Parts
Features
A lot of us will experience a wrecked car at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a bad accident or just a generic parts malfunction, a lot of cars go kaput across the country every year. Most people, of course, will just send the old girl to the scrapyard – some might even pay for the pleasure. But if you want to get your money’s worth, there are a few more things you can do. We’re going to explain all in this short guide and reveal some of the secrets of scrapping your car – the right way.   The easy route First of all, if you know your car is a genuine write-off, look elsewhere before you offload to the scrapyard. I know what you’re thinking – how can I possibly sell my wrecked car? But the truth is some companies will buy cars in all kinds of conditions. Speak to them before contacting your local scrappers, and if they offer more, it’s a quick win. Understand the cause Next, if you want to get the most money back from a wreck, you need to know why it is wrecked. If you know a mechanic now is a good time to call them in. You will need to know everything that is working and everything that is ruined. Strip them out and sell anything beyond redemption for scrap.  It’s important to stress that you can’t sell broken car parts to anyone. You wouldn’t want to be responsible if someone has an accident because of the parts you sold. Battery and fuel The most obvious part you can sell is your battery. Even if it’s dead, it’s the exception to the faulty parts rule. Car dealers will buy them so they can recycle the battery. You should also drain the tank of any fuel that is left. While you won’t be able to sell it to anyone, you can use it in another vehicle and bank the savings you make at the pumps. Stripping the parts Next, up, you can start stripping down the car of everything from seats to spark plugs. If your tires are in good shape, it will be easy enough to sell them. You could even pick up a few hundred bucks if they are desirable enough. If the tires are worn, you should seek out a local dealer to buy them from you – again, they will be happy to recycle them. Don’t forget about your in-car audio system, either. Again, a unit and speakers in excellent condition can sell for hundreds of dollars. There are opportunities to sell windscreen wipers, gear sticks, and seat covers. Even the little ashtrays that live in your doors can find a happy buyer. All of this is precisely what the local scrap yard will be doing, and in some cases, you can raise anything up to $1,000 or so. Not bad for a little bit of effort, right? The intricate bits Finally, strip the rest of your car out and see what you can sell. Copper wiring, the engine, and any metal on your car at all will have value. However, bear in mind that shipping an engine can be expensive – so don’t forget to add these additional costs to your prices. Good luck with the car stripping – hope you make some money back!  scarpyard-india
