What Qualities Do The Top Supercars Share?
Features
For many, it is something of a dream, and for others a dream come true. Owning and driving a supercar is something that all car lovers dream about from time to time. It’s not hard to see why – after all, they are called supercars for a reason. The fact is, however, that there is no real abiding definition of what a supercar is. The definition seems to change every time a new supercar is brought out, and no two people seem to have the same idea of what a supercar really needs, and what it can probably do without. In this post, we will be trying to answer the question: what makes a supercar a supercar? Is there anything that such a vehicle cannot do without? Performance-Driven upercar-qualities-aston-martin-v8-vantage Perhaps the first essential quality supercars require is a supercar blueprint. Front engine rear wheel drive? What about rear engine rear wheel drive or perhaps mid-engine rear wheel drive? Generally speaking most supercars are always rear wheel drive. Why? Because sending typically around 500bhp to the rear wheels means power slides. Supercars also need to be fast yet conversely the best supercars need not necessarily be the fastest. And performance is not limited to outright speed. For example a supercar needs to sound like a thug. Take the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, it isn’t as fast as the equivalent Porsche 911 but the exhaust emits a characteristic Gatling gun roar that feels elemental almost primordial. The more modern and far superior McLaren 570S may be able to run rings around the Aston but it’s V8 engine is muffled by it’s twin-turbos which can’t match the sound of the normally aspirated V8 Vantage. So performance, outright speed should be matched to a certain amount of charisma. Oh and it has to handle like a god yet be comforting like a 13.5 tog duvet. Changing With The Technology upercar-qualities-bmw-i8 Right now we are living through a rapid expansion of technological developments and breakthroughs. Today’s cars are connected, have advanced self driving modes with driver assistant features one such is Tesla’s AutoPilot. Perhaps the unlikeliest adoption of technologies supercars are beginning to utilise is the new generation of powertrains.  These powertrains include the latest hybrids, plugin-hybrids and pure electric platforms. Technology that has been developed to make cars cleaner has been exploited by supercar makers for power gains. One example is the BMW i8 or the latest hybrid Honda NSX another is the McLaren P1, however the P1 is more hypercar than supercar. Yet the key ingredient remains the same, outrageous styling and extreme performance compared to say… a Toyota Avensis. Supercars are a way for a high volume manufacturer to create a halo car that will draw marketing attention to the rest of the company. The Ford Marstang is more muscle car than supercar, but it has the classic ingredients of the Supercar. V8 mounted at the front, outrageous power and DB9 inspired head turning looks. But if a Marstang is too blue collar for you and you can’t afford to buy that supercar for the high school graduation or the end of year school prom then most people go down the route of supercar rental. Like Chris Brown who rented a Lamborghini specifically so he could beat up then girlfriend Rihanna. Limited Production upercar-qualities-pagani One of the main attractive points of a true supercar is that there are relatively few of them around, think Pagani Huayra. It is their rarity which leads to the massive price tag, after all, as well as the desirability that we all know and love. If a car like a Ford Marstang does not have this limited production, then you may as well be consuming a bag of potatoes chips. And that is not something you want to be able to say of your supercar. For a supercar to be a supercar, it needs to make people say wow as it drives past them.  upercar-qualities-ford-mustang
