Alonso Denies He Will Quit McLaren Honda At End of The Season
Formula One
As Formula One heads for the second round of the championship in China Fernando Alonso’s future at Mclaren remains in doubt his contract expires at the end of the season. Ron Dennis lured Alonso back to McLaren and the hook at the end of the line had a Honda engine attached to it. Alonso must have dreamt about recreating the Senna Prost years when McLaren Honda dominated F1 during the 1980’s. The 21st century McLaren Honda partnership isn’t going very well, Ron Dennis has been ousted after a board room coup and Honda have taken a dramatic step backwards in terms of engine development. Honda had promised the 2017 season would see a more powerful and reliable power unit with very nearly the same power as the Mercedes engine. But Honda have started the season badly. During pre-season testing McLaren Honda spent more time in the pits than actually testing. When the team headed to Australia for the first GP of the season the prediction was neither McLaren Honda would finish the race. As it turned out both McLaren’s had a trouble free weekend that was until the very end when Alonso’s McLaren suffered a brake issue which forced him to quit the race. Which is a kind of good sign. Alonso had been in a points scoring position but only because the faster cars ahead had retired for their own reasons. Honda’s all new engine is less powerful than last season and as Alonso approaches the twilight of his career some believe he won’t have the patience to stick around. During a media interview in China ahead of the Grand Prix weekend Alonso said: “If one ex-driver is interviewed, there is always one question about Alonso, on the situation, how difficult it is. “I prefer to be here than in a supermarket in my home town.” Alonso continued: Everyone [acts like they are] close to me and it’s like I have a depression, and it’s not like that. In F1, I am delivering at my best, I am more prepared than ever. I perform at my best.” Alonso added: “The team is not very competitive now; there’s nothing we can do from one day to another. Its a little bit difficult to understand… how the engine could have done a step backwards this year”. Speculation is swirling that Alonso could be leaving McLaren at the end of the season and his next destination will be a reunion with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. but Alsono said: “I have nothing really to say. I know there is some media speculation about things. I read also the things. But as far as I am concerned there is no news.”  Fernando-Alonso-Walkaway-peculation-2017
