Mercedes Is Developing an App to Keep You and Your Vehicle Safe
Auto News

The Mercedes company has been a mainstay in the luxury car industry for more than 130 years, and like many other manufacturers, they have finally started to change with the times. The automotive giant is set to release a new app designed to keep both you and your Mercedes safe while you’re on the road. Let’s take a closer look at this new app and what it will mean for Mercedes owners now and in the future.

City Parking Is the Worst

If you live in a city, finding somewhere to park is a hassle, app or no app — and it gets even worse than that if you drive a luxury vehicle that might be a target for thieves. You can pay attention to police reports and news articles that might tell you where the worst parking in the city is, but it might not always be accurate and can take time out of your day. It might not even help — the areas thieves target can change daily. Mercedes wants to help their customers keep their cars safe, and maintain their well-earned, century-old reputation when they’re parked for the night or during the workday. Smartphone Parking Assistance We all have our smartphone on us, basically at all times. Mercedes is taking advantage of this by creating an app that shows drivers the safest place to park. If you’re looking for a place to park, all you’ll need to do is look at the app to see if your space is a safe place to leave your car. Green is good — the neighborhood is safe, and you can be sure that as long as you lock your doors, your car will be there when you come back. Yellow means it isn’t the best option — you might not lose your car, but it’s not as bad as it could be. Red, just like at a traffic light, means stop. The area isn’t a secure place to park, and you should avoid it if at all possible. This app isn’t available just yet, but it recently had a trial run in Seattle using the most recently available crime data. Other similar programs use quarterly or annual data — the data in the Mercedes app uses crime statistics as recent as two weeks old. We don’t have a release date yet for this app, but it appears Mercedes will unveil it first with the new E-Class, along with some self-driving features. If the rumors prove true, you may even be able to unlock and start your car by getting near it with your smartphone in your pocket. We talked about car manufacturers joining the 21st century, but Mercedes is trying to take it to a whole new level. The company’s planning to release its new E-series class in time for the 2019 model year, so we’ll have to wait and see what features this new entry in the Mercedes lineup has in store for us.
