This is the new Citroen C5 Aircross hybrid (PHEV), it marks the first step in Citroen’s electrification offensive. The year 2020 will see Citroen transition to an extended range, which will be enhanced by 100% electric and plug-in hybrid models, in addition to the existing internal combustion engines, a strategy which will be concluded by 2025. The C5 Aircross Hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine in combination with an electric motor and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Total system power yields 222bhp and 320Nm of torque.  

The C5 Hybrid has a total pure electric range of 31 miles. Like all hybrids, the electric range will always be 50-percent of the manufacturer’s claims. That’s from our experience driving plugin-hybrids from different manufacturers.

The C5 Hybrid’s electric motor is nestled within the 8-speed automatic gearbox. On pure electric drive, the C5 Aircross Hybrid can reach 84 mph. When electric power is depleted, recharging can from 0-100 percent takes around 2 hours… if you have a 7.4kW wall box charger installed.

The electric mode is designed to be used primarily for short-distance trips. For longer trips, pure-electric range is depleted quickly before the petrol engine takes over the task of providing drive. As an example. If you are beginning a motorway journey of 60 miles, driving at 70mph the electric range will be depleted after 8 miles.

Citroen has improved the insulation of the C5 Hybrid with acoustic laminated front windows. The suspension is uprated, Progressive Hydraulic Cushions and Advanced Comfort seats, replicate a ‘magic carpet’ effect, says Citroen. Equipment levels will be high for sure.
