Yankee Doodle Jeep Wrangler Ain’t Good Enough For Starch Collared Europeans
Auto News

The two-door variant of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has fallen… fallen victim to European emissions regulations. Europe is toughening up its emissions laws and that means the Wrangler is somewhat of an outlaw. Undeterred, it will ride back into town as a shiny new PHEV-only model. But there is a proviso, only the 4-door model will get PHEV tech. Jeep has publicly stated that the PHEV powertrain doesn’t fit into the shorter wheelbase of the 2-door chassis. We’re smelling a bit of BS here. The Jeep Wrangler, be it 2 or 4 doors, is a massive vehicle. You can fit a nuclear PowerStation in either one if needed.

The actual reason may well be that the 4-door version sells in larger numbers. Jeep sold around 7,000 Wranglers in Europe during 2020. According to JATO Dynamics, the 2-door- Wrangler accounted for 30 percent of sales. So the reason why the 2-door Wrangler is being discontinued in Europe is due to the cost of transitioning two models to a PHEV powertrain isn’t worth it.

We reckon Jeep doesn’t want to admit this because they don’t want to give the wrong impression to customers. That’s PR for you folks. The Jeep Wrangler does fare better in its home region of the U.S.A (naturally) where it sold 201,000 times during 2020.
