We don’t know what substance the people over at Mercedes brand marketing smoke, but we do know professionals in demanding roles have a proclivity to abuse substances. It gives meaning to their existence, a chance to unwind away from the daily pressures of brand marketing. That’s probably why marketing people conjure up overly-long monikers. Or what is commonly known as moniker-stuffing. Perhaps their minds aren’t clear, perhaps they are thinking far too much about the next substance abuse session. That’s the only logic we can apply to ascertain why this EQS has such an unnecessarily, unwieldy long name. The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC, EQS is an all-new generation electric sedan. So why didn’t Mercedes use a different, all-new, naming convention?
Familiarity, people have to understand that the EQS is a Mercedes. Using familiar terms that have been drummed into the subconscious mind over the last 15 years will hopefully continue to generate sales. Suppose the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC was called the Mercedes Phantom Glider? perhaps that wouldn’t sell as a new generation electric sedan. Familiarity sells. So what is the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC about? It is the performance version, the most powerful version yet of the EQS.
If the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC was an analog combustion-powered car, then it would most probably be powered by an old-school 6.0-litre, quad-turbo V12, in old money. In this case, power is actually supplied by a 107.8 kWh battery which drives a 4WD, dual-motor AMG electric drivetrain producing 658 hp and 950 Nm (761 hp and 1,020 Nm with the optional £8K AMG Performance package with the Night Edition).
With a range of up to 358 miles (WLTP) from its 107.8 kWh battery, the EQS 53 4MATIC+ sprints from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 137mph. The EQS 53 Night Edition with the optional AMG Performance Package has a 0-62pmph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.
The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC rides on 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. The interior is nothing other than luxurious and will be packed with all manner of driver aid gizmos and will feature the latest interior tech that money at this price point can buy. But you will have to pay for it.
The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC is on sale now in the UK, with the first vehicles arriving in April 2022. Prices start from £154,995 OTR with a choice of two model lines: Night Edition and Touring. The optional AMG Performance package is available with the Night Edition only. The Rear Luxury Lounge package is available with the Touring only.
