NIO ET5, The Chinese Tesla Rival That Borrows Tesla Styling Cues
Auto News

The NIO ET5, no need to phone home and tell your friends about it because the ET5 has already landed. Externally the NIO ET5 borrows a lot of design influences from various car manufactures.

The front section with the low bonnet has similar styling cues to the Tesla Model 3. From the side profile, we noticed shades of the Audi A7. The rear wrap-around tail lights are almost Porsche 911/Taycan in design style. But the NIO ET5 is no European doppelganger it is an all Chinese European proto-doppelganger. This entry-level NIO EV sedan is slightly bigger than a Tesla Model 3, and you know what? overall the clean design looks better than a Model 3.

The ET5 has three model range options 75kWh, 100kWh and 150kWh which deliver 342 miles, 435 miles and 621 miles of range respectively. Electric cars are actually not cars, they are glorified smartphones with wheels. The ET5 has Autonomous Driving. Eventually, the software will develop to a stage where driving becomes safer, be it on highways, urban roads, and parking, so says NIO.

Tesla has obviously had a big impact on interior car design. No physical buttons just a dash dominated by a large infotainment touchscreen. The NIO ET5 follows a similar minimalist approach with a 10.2-inch HDR instrument cluster and a large, touchscreen infotainment screen.

NIO is also offering VR glasses for an augmented reality experience when driving. Presumably, the glasses will project driving instrumentation in the line of sight.  Other tech features include a UWB digital and smart key, Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system, and a 256-color curtain of ambient lighting.

The NIO ET5 will be priced at around $51K, or 328,000 RMB, and become retail-ready in September 2022. For now, the ET5 is a China-only model, although there are limited plans to expand NIO sales territories into Norway, Germany, Sweden in addition to a further 23 countries.
