F1 Pre-Season Testing Dates Confirmed
Formula One

Formula One teams begin the first day of testing their 2022 spec cars with three days of pre-season testing in Spain which is scheduled to run in Barcelona between February 23-25. Sweeping new regulations have been brought in for 2022. The changes predominantly affect the aerodynamics that is designed to cause less destabilizing aero-wake. In theory, this could allow cars to run closer together. The hope is that changes will allow for more overtaking. The February test will allow teams to move away from sim-based algorithm testing to the real world.

While simulation testing is getting more accurate, real-world testing will introduce many wild cards computer modeling can not replicate. Pre-season testing will then move to Bahrain on March 10-12 ahead of the first race, the Bahrain Grand Prix, on the weekend of March 18-20.

Testing has been significantly reduced over the last decade. In the past, pre-season testing lasted up to a month with testing scheduled throughout the season. Current regulations significantly limit testing to just pre-season.

However, with advances in modern computer technology, teams have switched to virtual testing campaigns. This includes advanced simulators, computer modeling of aerodynamics, engineering, and fluid dynamics.

While physical testing is reduced the actual test campaign behind the scenes is busier than ever before. Aston Martin will be the first to reveal their 2022 spec car on February 8th with many other teams sure to follow.
