Second Generation Mercedes AMG GT Coupe Is Evolution Over Revolution
Auto News

Just last week, Mercedes unveiled the second-generation AMG GT Coupe. While it might appear as a modestly revamped mid-cycle update at first glance, it has in fact grown in size compared to its predecessor. Opting for an approach of gradual evolution rather than a radical change in terms of aesthetics seems to have been a prudent decision.

In the case of the previous generation AMG GT, sales weren’t particularly robust. For instance, in the United States, AMG GT sales hit their peak at over 4,000 units sold in 2019, but since then, sales have steadily dwindled, reaching a modest 1,350 sales in 2023.

Unfazed, Mercedes diligently toiled behind the scenes, laying the groundwork for the upcoming second-generation evolution. The AMG GT coupe stands as a halo car—a beacon of the company’s engineering finesse—even if it might not contribute significantly to profits.

The forthcoming generation of the coupe will offer a duo of models: the AMG GT 63 and the AMG GT 55. As for the pricing, details have not yet been divulged. Under the hood, a meticulously crafted AMG 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine empowers both variants, and they come equipped with all-wheel drive as a standard feature.

Within the AMG GT 63, the engine unleashes an impressive 577 hp, enabling a swift 0-to-60 mph acceleration in just 3.1 seconds. On the other hand, the GT 55 showcases the prowess of its V-8 unit, generating 469 hp and achieving a 0-to-60 mph sprint in 3.8 seconds.

Engineering details active aerodynamics, revised multilink suspension geometry, optional AWD, rear locking differential for optimised stability, carbon composite brakes and rear axle steering. The body shell utilises a mix of aluminium, steel, magnesium, and fibre composite materials to enable the highest possible rigidity at a low weight.

Although pricing is not yet confirmed, the Mercedes AMG GT Coupe is anticipated to commence at £150,000 in the UK. The first batch of customer vehicles is slated for 2024.
