Mercedes Shifts S Class Production To India
Auto News

The banner headlines are incorrect, the Mercedes Indian production facility is indeed limited to assembling S Class saloons for the local market. The aim is to sidestep import duties, therefore, reducing the cost of an S Class to a more affordable price point. Buying a new S Class anywhere in the world isn’t exactly cheap. In the U.S pricing for the S Class start from $110,000.  The S Class currently retails in India for £295,000 (22M rupees). By localizing production Mercedes will be able to reduce the S Class price point to around $230K (17M rupees).

The same levels of luxury and kit will be offered to the Indian market as it is offered to other international territories. So expect Indian customers to receive the same levels of powertrains, technology and leather-lined interior. Although it must be noted the Cow is considered a sacred animal in India, so maybe it’s not a good idea for Mercedes to offer cowhide as an interior option.

Mercedes will ship S Class parts over from Germany, in a kind of pre-built / pre-finished kit form. Then the car will simply be assembled by fully trained Indian technicians. Mercedes will announce full specifications and pricing on October 7.
