Chinese automotive startup Nio has introduced the first mass-produced semi-solid battery pack, set to be integrated into the battery swap service in the coming months. This innovative battery boasts an energy density of 260 Wh/kg and enables a range of up to 1,055 km (655 miles). Established in 2014, Nio, a luxury electric car brand, primarily provides its vehicles with two battery options: 75 kWh and 100 kWh.

Following the initial announcement in 2021, Nio has commenced mass production of the 150-kWh semi-solid battery (SSB). This groundbreaking battery was designed by WeLion New Energy Technology, a Beijing-based battery maker that also serves as Nio’s battery cell supplier.

Semi Solid Battery Technology Explained?

In Semi-Solid State battery manufacturing, the chemical solvents remain inside the battery during assembly, transforming into a solid electrolyte interphase. This enhances safety by reducing the risk of fires and burns associated with lithium-ion batteries.

Even when subjected to performance tests, such as puncturing with a metal spike, Semi-Solid State batteries exhibit superior safety compared to other options. Additionally, they boast a higher energy density per unit weight.

Nio reports that the 150 kWh SSB cells boast an impressive energy density of 360 Wh/kg, while the entire pack maintains a density of 260 Wh/kg. Another notable feature of this pack is its cooling system, which is six times more robust than conventional batteries.

The weight of the 150 kWh SSB is 676 kg, a 20 kg increase compared to Nio’s 100 kWh battery pack. In contrast, the 135.5 kWh LFP battery from BYD weighs 903 kg. Nio has not disclosed the exact launch date for the 150 kWh SSB.

NIO’s solid-state battery pack will be available to customers as an option, exclusively available through subscription. The mass production of this battery pack has commenced in China.
