At the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon came under fire and increased scrutiny for his attempted pass on teammate Pierre Gasly which ended in the two making contact. The incident caused Ocon’s retirement from the race, while Gasley survived to finish the race. The debate since, that team mates should never crash into each other, is a talking point that will never wane.

However, one individual who seems to have stepped out of the Monaco Grand Prix spotlight is Kevin Magnussen. Magnussen caused a massive three-car crash while attempting to pass Sergio Perez’s Red Bull. Despite not being in a favourable position for overtaking, he manoeuvred his front wing end plate into Perez’s right rear wheel during the fast, twisting run up through Beau Rivage.

The resulting contact led to a massive crash that left Nico Hulkenberg trapped in no man’s land, becoming a victim of Magnussen’s bewildering thought process. The Red Bull ended up a mangled wreck, but thankfully all three drivers walked away without needing medical assistance. Given this, Kevin Magnussen should consider walking away from F1, and the sooner, the better.

It’s difficult to believe that Magnussen defended his disastrous overtake, and even more perplexing that the FIA race stewards took no further action. Just as in everyday road situations, the driver behind has a responsibility to be aware at all times—a basic driving theory that should apply to Formula One.

However, Magnussen insists that the gap was there for him to attempt an overtake, though video footage clearly contradicts this. Magnussen has always been and remains a dangerous driver. Occasionally he puts together a good weekend that ends with a haul of points. But he is and always will be a journeyman of F1.

If he considers the outcome of his participation in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix a mere racing incident, then he should seriously contemplate pursuing another career.
