Will Italy Ever Accept Lewis Hamilton As A Ferrari Driver
Formula One

Italy and Ferrari are inseparable; the sports car manufacturer is a source of national pride. When Ferrari succeeds, it brings the international spotlight to Italy, enhancing the country’s global image. The Tifosi, Ferrari fans, are renowned for their unparalleled passion, distinct from even the fervent supporters of Italian football.

Yet, there exists a perception that Italy ranks among Europe’s most racist countries. While I cannot verify this accusation, it persists as a pervasive and harmful urban myth. The pressing question then arises: will Italy ever embrace a black man driving for their beloved Ferrari F1 team? The answer lies in the fact that Lewis Hamilton will indeed be driving for Scuderia Ferrari in 2025.

Lewis Hamilton, with seven world titles and over 100 race wins, brings undeniable credentials. His arrival at Ferrari next year prompts reflection: will Italy confront issues of racial perception within its society, or will it exacerbate existing discrimination?

In the ancient world and the Roman Empire, biological racism did not exist, and the colour of one’s skin did not present an obstacle to integration into society. Much has changed since then, the rise of the Anglo-Saxon culture, the industrialisation of repressive and colonial empires, nationalism and neo-fascism.

Neo-fascists are known to trumpet dog whistle, divide-and-conquer politics targeting and demonising minorities to divert attention from the real underlying problems in order purpose the advancement of political ambition.

The last English Ferrari driver was Nigel Mansell, and he was adored and respected by the Tifosi in equal measure. While the Tifosi will accept Hamilton as their equal, the wider debate about Italian society accepting Hamilton is an open case study waiting to be written.
