What do you get when you cross a Porsche Cayenne, a Ferrari Purosangue, and a McLaren 720S? You get the Xiaomi SU7.

Its styling may be a point of debate here in the West, but in China, it sold like the proverbial hotcake—or more fittingly, like jianbing, China’s beloved street snack.

Xiaomi, often referred to as China’s answer to Apple, is a tech giant in its home market. So when the company entered the EV space, consumers flocked to buy a Xiaomi-branded electric vehicle. The SU7 is Xiaomi’s response to the Tesla Model Y, and it has triggered a buying frenzy across China, with over 290,000 orders and counting.

Ironically, this runaway success poses a challenge for Xiaomi: the company currently lacks the production capacity to fulfil such overwhelming demand. As a result, customers can expect a waiting time of 2 to 3 years before all orders are delivered.

In the meantime, the YouTube channel Telescope, based in China, got behind the wheel for an early test drive of the SU7 to see what all the fuss is about.
