Honda is reviving the Prelude nameplate with a sleek hybrid coupe set to launch in fall 2025 across Europe, Japan, and North America. Designed as a sportier, more dynamic alternative to the Civic, the new Prelude targets driving enthusiasts with updated architecture and styling.
Rumours suggest high-performance variants are in development. A Prelude Type S may debut in fall 2026, followed by a more aggressive Type R in 2027, featuring bold design elements like wider fenders, GT-style wing, and sport-tuned components.
Inside, the Type R is expected to offer bucket seats, red accents, and exclusive digital displays. While initial reports hinted at a turbocharged 2.0L engine from the Civic Type R, newer speculation points to a high-output version of Honda’s twin-motor hybrid system, potentially producing over 300 hp.
A major shift in the new Honda Prelude will be the absence of a manual transmission. Instead, it will utilise Honda’s 300bhp e:HEV hybrid system, which does not feature a traditional gearbox. To maintain driver engagement, the standard Prelude will feature a “S+ Shift” mode that simulates gear changes using sound effects, torque modulation, and paddle shifters.
In the Type R variant, this system is expected to be further enhanced for a more immersive and performance-oriented driving experience. This move would align with upcoming emissions regulations, especially in Europe, where the gas-only Civic Type R is set to be discontinued by 2026.
