Ford plans to introduce Level 3 driver-assistance systems by 2028, allowing hands- and eyes-off driving on certain highways.
The technology will debut on its new electric vehicle platform, starting with a midsize EV truck in 2027 priced around $30,000, though the Level 3 system will be an optional, extra-cost feature.
Ford is developing the system in-house, using lidar to improve safety, reduce reliance on suppliers, and enable faster updates.
Level 3 systems are currently limited to highways due to predictable traffic patterns, with Mercedes offering a highway-only option in some U.S. states and GM planning a similar system for its Cadillac Escalade IQ.
Assisted-driving tech, including Ford’s current Level 2 BlueCruise, is a stepping stone toward fully autonomous vehicles and potential subscription revenue.
Ford also plans to launch an AI assistant in vehicles and via a mobile app to aid tasks such as load planning, following similar moves by GM, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz.
