Unitree GD01 Mecha Suit
Forget Supercars — Millionaires Now Want Giant Robot Mecha Suits

It’s being called the world’s first production-ready manned mechanical bipedal suit — which is a very long-winded way of saying China has basically built a real-life anime mech.

Built by Unitree Robotics, the 500kg GD01 can stomp around on two legs or crawl on all fours like some nightmare robot bear from the future. And if you’ve got a spare $650,000 lying around between yacht payments, you can actually buy one.

Now, what exactly you’re supposed to do with it remains unclear. You could use it as a tech demonstrator, terrify your neighbours, or perhaps send it into hazardous environments where humans would rather not go. But let’s be honest — most buyers will probably just use it to recreate scenes from anime while shouting dramatically in their driveway.

Still, ridiculous as it seems, this thing says a lot about the speed of robotics development coming out of China right now. While everyone else is still arguing over EV subsidies and touchscreens, Unitree has gone and built a walking mech suit you can actually climb inside.

The real question is this: is the GD01 the future of industrial robotics… or just the world’s most expensive toy for very rich men who never grew out of Transformers?
