Lewis Hamilton left Suzuka with more questions than answers after a puzzling loss of straight-line speed compromised his Japanese Grand Prix.
Initially suspected to be an issue with Ferrari’s power unit, the root cause proved more complex. Subsequent analysis revealed that it wasn’t a single failure, but a combination of systems working in unison that cost Hamilton an estimated eight to nine tenths per lap on the straights — a deficit that left him exposed against both teammates and rivals.
That lack of pace was evident as he struggled to match the speed of Charles Leclerc in the sister Ferrari. Although a well-timed Safety Car handed Hamilton a strategic opportunity — allowing him to leap forward and briefly challenge near the front after passing George Russell — the underlying issue ultimately caught up with him.
Overtaken in the closing stages by Leclerc, Russell, and Lando Norris, Hamilton slipped back to sixth at the flag, while Leclerc secured a podium finish in third.
With a month-long gap before Miami, Ferrari has since worked to understand the anomaly, confirming that the performance loss extended beyond the engine itself. As the championship heads stateside, Hamilton sits fourth in the standings, eight points adrift of Leclerc — and still seeking clarity as much as momentum.
In conversation with the media, Lewis Hamilton detailed what went wrong.
The last race [Japan], I could see I was down on power. We did a deep dive and understand that it wasn’t the engine, but the systems all together, several things coming together to lose me eight to nine tenths of straight-line power.”
“I just struggled with power in Japan. Some reason I was just down. I was in a defense. I was defending the whole time. The guys all around me, just seemed to have more power.”
“I think the break between Japan and Miami, it’s been good for everyone to step back and analyse their first three races”
So we got on top of the issues we faced in Japan, worked in the sim, been at the factory every week, training a huge amount, and refreshing for this weekend.”
