McLarena: McLaren Weighs Rotating Rear Wing Inspired By Rival Gains
Formula One

McLaren Formula 1 Team CEO Zak Brown has indicated that the team may explore developing a “Macarena” style rotating rear wing after noting that similar concepts used by Ferrari and Red Bull appear to offer performance gains.

The design—an evolving form of active rear aerodynamics—was first seen in brief testing by Scuderia Ferrari during pre-season, before being run more consistently at the Miami Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing also introduced its own version of the concept during the same weekend as part of a wider upgrade package.

Both teams reportedly benefitted from the innovation, with Red Bull showing improved competitiveness and Ferrari continuing to develop the system across race conditions. McLaren also delivered a strong Miami performance after introducing upgrades to the MCL40, securing second and third places through Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Brown said McLaren had assessed similar technology previously, but concerns over added complexity and slower deployment compared with standard DRS systems had initially limited interest. However, the recent success of rival teams has prompted a fresh look at the idea.

The rotating rear wing concept had been considered by multiple teams for the 2026 regulation cycle, but many shelved development due to uncertainty over its practicality and potential drawbacks.

McLaren currently sits third in the constructors’ championship behind Ferrari and Mercedes, having recovered from a difficult start to the season that included a double retirement in China. Norris leads the team’s drivers’ standings effort, while rookie Kimi Antonelli leads the overall championship after four rounds of the Formula One World Championship 2026.

With the competitive field tightening at the front, Brown suggested that aerodynamic innovation like this could play a growing role in shaping future race performance.
