Global electric vehicle manufacturer NIO has marked a decade of UK-based engineering with the opening of a new research and development centre in Witney, Oxfordshire.
The facility brings together more than 40 UK engineers under one roof, strengthening collaboration and supporting the company’s global EV development programmes.
The new 9,460 sq ft site at Book End consolidates NIO’s previous UK operations at Begbroke Science Park and Bicester Motion. It includes a dedicated computer-aided engineering (CAE) workspace and a vehicle laboratory, designed to improve efficiency across simulation, testing and development work.
The move reflects NIO’s long-term commitment to expanding its European engineering presence.
Established in 2016, NIO’s Oxfordshire team has played a key role in the company’s global R&D efforts, contributing to projects ranging from the EP9 electric hypercar to the ET9 flagship executive EV.
The UK team has also supported development work on NIO’s Firefly compact EV brand and broader platform technologies.
Senior executives and industry figures attended the opening ceremony, highlighting the strategic importance of the site within NIO’s international network.
The company now operates R&D and manufacturing centres across more than 10 global locations, including Shanghai, Munich, Budapest and Abu Dhabi.
The UK operation focuses on advanced engineering disciplines such as CFD, durability testing, handling, NVH and safety development, including Euro NCAP performance.
It also plays a growing role in regulatory engagement and AI policy discussions within European automotive frameworks.
NIO says the new facility will accelerate innovation and reinforce the UK’s position as a key hub for advanced electric vehicle engineering.
