The rugged SUV market has a new heavyweight, and it comes wearing a badge you probably weren’t expecting. Meet the DENZA BAO 5 – a plug-in hybrid bruiser that mixes luxury-car toys with serious off-road hardware, all for less than a Range Rover.

Priced from £69,500, the BAO 5 doesn’t exactly arrive empty-handed. Even the entry-level Elegance gets heated, ventilated and massage seats, an 18-speaker Devialet sound system, a panoramic roof and enough screens to make a tech convention jealous. It even has a built-in compartment that can chill your drinks to -6°C or keep your takeaway warm. Camping trip? Sorted.

Step up to the £78,880 Ultimate and things get even more serious. You get Nappa leather, powered side steps and DENZA’s clever DiSus-P air suspension, which can raise the body by 90mm or lower it by 50mm depending on whether you’re climbing a mountain or squeezing into a multi-storey car park. It can even level itself when parked, so your tent doesn’t end up on a slope.

Underneath is where things get interesting. Instead of relying on a burly V6 or V8, the BAO 5 uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with two electric motors to produce 544PS and 760Nm. The petrol engine mostly acts as a generator, but can pitch in when needed, helping launch this two-tonne off-roader from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds.

A 31.8kWh Blade Battery delivers up to 56 miles of electric driving, while 100kW DC charging tops it from 30 to 80 per cent in just 16 minutes.

It’s luxurious, absurdly well equipped and unapologetically over-engineered. If the established off-road elite weren’t paying attention before, they probably should be now.
