Geely Has Just Out-Engineered Mercedes With Its Latest Super Efficient “Thunder Cat” Hybrid Engine

Geely Galaxy has introduced its new “Thunder” 16-in-1 intelligent electric drive system, a highly integrated electric powertrain developed by Geely Holding Group subsidiary InfiMotion. The company claims the system delivers a production-leading 93.8% comprehensive efficiency, setting a new benchmark for mass-produced electric vehicle drive systems.

The “Thunder” system integrates 12 hardware components—including the motor, motor controller, reducer, DCDC converter, onboard charger (OBC), power distribution unit (PDU), battery management systems, vehicle control unit (VCU), thermal management system (TMS), active pre-charge control and power domain gateway—alongside four software functions covering intelligent energy, charging, motion and health management. According to Geely, this cross-domain integration eliminates more than 180 redundant components while achieving a power density of 11.8 kW/kg.

Designed with a lightweight magnesium alloy housing, the system combines the motor, reducer and mounting brackets into a single compact assembly. Weighing 75 kg, it is around 15% lighter than comparable systems, while reducing high-voltage wiring by 30% and low-voltage wiring by 15%. Its compact dimensions, with a vertical height of less than 325 mm, also free up approximately 28 litres of additional luggage space.

Built on an 800V high-voltage platform, the drive system incorporates Geely’s “One-Chip” technology, which reduces control latency from an industry average of 40 milliseconds to as little as 2 milliseconds, improving system responsiveness.

Geely also highlighted the system’s energy efficiency. During a test around Qinghai Lake, a vehicle equipped with the new drive unit recorded an energy consumption of 8.2 kWh/100 km under specific test conditions. For production models, the company says the system supports a CLTC-rated energy consumption as low as 10.7 kWh/100 km.

The drive system employs AI-powered control algorithms to optimise performance in challenging operating conditions. At temperatures as low as -18°C, it can retain thermal energy equivalent to around 7 kWh, reducing cabin heating energy consumption by more than 40%.

The new powertrain makes its production debut in the recently unveiled Geely Galaxy TT electric sports sedan. Measuring 4,999 mm long with a 2,920 mm wheelbase, the model will be offered in two powertrain configurations: a rear-wheel-drive version producing 245 kW (329 hp) and an all-wheel-drive variant delivering 425 kW (570 hp), enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.8 seconds.

Customers will be able to choose from 52.4 kWh, 63.8 kWh and 75.2 kWh battery packs, offering CLTC driving ranges between 540 km and 725 km, depending on the selected configuration.

With the introduction of the “Thunder” system, Geely is aiming to improve EV efficiency through greater component integration, reduced weight and AI-enhanced energy management, while showcasing the technology in its latest Galaxy TT electric sedan.
