Lando Norris 2026 British Grand Prix Interview
Norris Realistic Over McLaren Chances Despite Silverstone Optimism

There was a noticeable difference in Lando Norris’ demeanour as he arrived at Silverstone this year. Twelve months on from securing both a memorable British Grand Prix victory and his maiden Formula 1 World Championship, the McLaren driver appeared relaxed, reflective and quietly confident, despite acknowledging that the team faces a tougher challenge than it did a year ago.

“Pretty damn cool,” was Norris’ simple assessment of returning home as world champion. Yet he was quick to point out that the title itself has done little to change what Silverstone means to him.

“Every year here is cool, honestly, so the championship isn’t the thing that makes it much better or much worse. It’s just always a pleasure… to drive in front of your home fans, friends, family, the whole lot.”

“Perhaps the biggest difference is psychological. Gone is the pressure of chasing that elusive first home victory. Instead, Norris admitted he arrives with “more want from inside to try and win it the second time.”

The support surrounding him has grown dramatically. His expanded Landostand, now more than double the size of last year’s, has become one of the defining features of the British Grand Prix weekend. Yet despite his growing popularity, Norris remains grounded.

“I still see myself as just a kid that wants to go racing,” he said. “When I see all of this come together… it’s just quite unbelievable, honestly, to see the size of it and see how many people are here to support me. It’s something I’ve dreamt of.”

While the atmosphere may be celebratory, Norris was refreshingly realistic when discussing McLaren’s prospects.

“We’re simply not where we want to be,” he admitted.

Although he believes the team’s performance in Austria wasn’t significantly worse than Spain, he accepted that Red Bull currently holds the advantage and suggested podiums, rather than victories, are the realistic objective this weekend.

Nevertheless, optimism remains high inside Woking. Norris repeatedly stressed that his belief comes not from promises of future upgrades, but from the people around him.

“I know the team I have behind me. I know what McLaren’s capable of. I know what each individual within McLaren’s capable of.”

He added: “I still certainly think that podiums and wins… will come back to us later on in this season.”

One of the livelier moments of the press conference came when Norris was asked about speculation linking Max Verstappen with McLaren. Rather than avoiding the subject, he met it with a smile.

“To be honest, a lot of drivers want to come to McLaren. I don’t know why you just highlight Max.”

While describing the prospect of racing alongside a four-time world champion as “a cool thing”, Norris made it equally clear where his own future lies.

“I’m still going to be here for many, many more years,” he said, adding that he and Oscar Piastri are “working very well together” and remain fully focused on helping McLaren return to the front.”

The reigning champion also reflected on how success has changed his life. More fans and greater recognition have followed his title triumph, but not much else.

“I don’t want anything to change, honestly,” Norris explained. “Whether it’s one, three, five, whatever it’s going to be in the future, I’m happy as it is now.”

Perhaps his most revealing answer came when discussing his own evolution as a driver. Norris believes he has become “a little bit more of a complete driver,” capable of adapting to different cars and circumstances. At the same time, he offered genuine praise for Verstappen, identifying consistency—not outright speed—as the defining characteristic of greatness.

“What makes Max so incredible is how he is over the course of the season, every single weekend, performing to the level that he does.”

It was a reminder that while Norris has reached the summit of Formula 1, his ambition remains undimmed. Silverstone may not offer McLaren the dominant platform it enjoyed last year, but Norris left little doubt that both he and his team believe their next winning chapter is only a matter of time.
