Volkswagen has given the UK T-Roc a new Match trim after someone in Wolfsburg noticed that the existing versions weren’t quite sufficiently middle-class.

Available to order from 13 August, the Match costs £32,135 with the 116 PS 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid or £34,200 with the 150 PS version. Both use a seven-speed automatic gearbox, because changing gear yourself is now something best left to history.

For £500 more than the Life trim, buyers get 18-inch alloy wheels, heated seats, a heated leather steering wheel, privacy glass, Digital Cockpit Pro, navigation and an IDA voice assistant. In other words, everything required to make the school run feel faintly premium without actually becoming interesting.

More than two million T-Rocs have been sold since 2017, so clearly the boring formula works: make a sensible crossover, give it a slightly different grille and wait for Britain’s homeowners to arrive.

There is, at least, a 0% APR PCP offer available until 30 September, which should help soften the monthly financial blow.

The T-Roc Match is therefore an impressive example of modern motoring: perfectly competent, reasonably comfortable, sensibly priced and almost aggressively devoid of drama.

It won’t set your heart racing. It probably won’t embarrass you. It will simply sit outside your three-bedroom semi, heated seats waiting for you, while you wonder whether you remembered to put the bins out.
