Geely has looked at its EX5 electric SUV and apparently decided that what it really needed was another 114bhp. Sensible? Perhaps not. Interesting? Absolutely.

The updated EX5 now gets a rear-mounted electric motor producing 329bhp and 245kW, turning the family crossover into something considerably more lively than its predecessor.

It also moves onto an 800V electrical architecture, while buyers can choose between 61.5kWh and 70kWh batteries.

The larger battery delivers up to 635km (394 miles) of CLTC range, or 521km (318 miles) according to the more realistic WLTP test cycle. The smaller pack manages 550km (341 miles) CLTC and 451km (280 miles) WLTP.

And this isn’t merely a case of sticking a bigger motor underneath the existing car. The revised EX5 gains conventional door handles, a LiDAR sensor, additional front-fender sensors and chunkier bumpers. There’s also a surprisingly useful 160-litre front boot, capable of carrying up to 50kg.

Inside, things remain suitably futuristic, with a floating central touchscreen, digital instrument display and head-up display. There’s wireless phone charging, physical controls, a panoramic roof and a Flyme Sound audio system.

Geely is also fitting its G-Pilot H5 driver-assistance system, including Navigate on Autopilot capability for urban roads and motorways.

The EX5 will launch in China as the Galaxy E5, arriving at a rather interesting moment for the model. Geely sold 40,776 EX5s between January and August 2026, but that’s 45.9 per cent fewer than during the same period last year.
