Formula 1 To Return To Africa With New Rwandan Grand Prix
Formula One

Formula 1 is set to return to Africa for the first time since 1993 following a 10-year agreement to stage the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, in the early 2030s. The race will be held at a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, Rwanda.

Situated around 40 kilometres south of Kigali and close to the new Kigali International Airport, the circuit will be built to FIA Grade 1 standards.

The project, led by the Rwanda Development Board, forms part of a wider initiative to promote tourism, attract international investment and stimulate economic development.

The track will incorporate the area’s natural terrain and elevation changes to create a distinctive challenge for drivers while offering spectators clear views of the action.

Outside race weekends, the facility is expected to accommodate other motorsport competitions, conferences, entertainment and international events.

Formula 1 president and chief executive Stefano Domenicali welcomed the agreement, highlighting the continent’s estimated 100 million F1 fans and the opportunity to grow the sport’s global audience.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame described the partnership as an investment in the country’s future, with anticipated benefits including employment, skills development, tourism and business opportunities.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem also highlighted the potential to develop local talent and encourage greater participation in motorsport across Africa.

Details of the inaugural race, construction schedule and event arrangements will be confirmed later. Organisers intend the Grand Prix to deliver long-term economic and social benefits beyond the racing calendar.
