Tesla Roadster: The Rocket-Powered Supercar That Flys
Auto News

Tesla has taken the supercar concept into science-fiction territory, unveiling an extraordinary vision for its next-generation Roadster during a demonstration at SpaceX’s development facility in McGregor, Texas.

Combining electric performance with aerospace technology, Elon Musk’s latest project promises to push the boundaries of what a production car can achieve.

Tesla Roadster Rocket Car - Face Off

Described as the result of collaboration between the world’s leading electric-car and rocket companies, the new Roadster features a radical aerodynamic package, advanced propulsion technology and performance targets that challenge conventional automotive engineering.

The headline attraction is its SpaceX-inspired rocket system. According to Tesla, two high-pressure air tanks, holding a combined 600 litres, feed ten nozzles designed to deliver additional thrust.

The system uses compressed air rather than conventional rocket propellant, with the aim of enabling spectacular acceleration and dramatic manoeuvres.

During the presentation, the Roadster performed demonstrations including a ramp jump and a mid-air rotation dubbed the “kickflip”.

Musk also discussed the possibility of more ambitious aerial stunts, although the technology remains experimental and its real-world capabilities have yet to be independently verified.

Aerodynamics are equally unconventional. An integrated fan-based suction system is designed to generate substantial downforce, helping the car remain planted through corners.

Tesla claims the technology could produce lateral acceleration exceeding 2g, while an adjustable rear wing and selectable low-drag and high-downforce modes further enhance performance.

Inside, the two-seat Roadster adopts a minimalist, aerospace-inspired design, with seats integrated into the chassis and steer-by-wire controls.

Musk also claimed a demonstration achieved 0–60mph in 0.81 seconds, with production versions potentially going faster. These figures remain manufacturer claims, not independently verified production-car results.

Tesla says production is targeted to begin in 2028, although pricing, final specifications, regulatory approval and delivery schedules remain key unknowns.

Reservations are now open, with a £5,000 deposit required and a further £245,000 due within ten days.

If the company can translate its ambitious demonstrations into a road-legal, dependable package, the Roadster could redefine the electric hypercar.

For now, it remains one of the automotive world’s most audacious promises: a supercar that doesn’t merely accelerate like a rocket, but aims to borrow technology from one.
