More Than Half of UK Drivers Doubt They’d Pass Essential Driving Test Questions Today
Features

More than half of UK drivers do not believe they would pass the vehicle maintenance section of the driving test if questioned today, according to research from the Daily Car Blog.

The survey of 1,000 UK drivers found that 55% lacked confidence in their knowledge of essential under-bonnet components, while 54% were unsure about their basic car maintenance skills. Almost one in ten (9%) said they would not feel confident identifying any of the main components under the bonnet.

The findings highlight concerns about drivers’ understanding of vehicle maintenance, despite the DVSA’s “show me, tell me” questions being part of the driving test since 2003.

Dashboard warning lights cause confusion

The research also found that 42% of drivers were not confident understanding dashboard warning light symbols. More than half (51%) admitted waiting at least a week before acting on a warning light, while 13% delayed taking action for six months or longer.

When seeking explanations, 63% said they would use search engines such as Google, while 23% would turn to artificial intelligence for troubleshooting advice.

Motoring expert Tim Rodie warned that red warning lights require particular attention, as they can indicate immediate safety concerns or potential vehicle damage. Drivers should stop as soon as it is safe to do so if a critical warning appears.

Routine checks could prevent costly repairs

The survey revealed that 14% of drivers had never checked their engine oil levels, while just 28% checked their oil at least monthly.

Neglecting routine maintenance can lead to breakdowns, engine damage and expensive repair bills. Drivers are advised to follow their vehicle’s servicing schedule, monitor tyre pressure and tread depth, check fluid levels and investigate warning lights promptly.

Simple tasks, including topping up washer fluid and replacing wiper blades, can often be completed by drivers themselves. However, safety-critical repairs, electrical faults and diagnostic work should be left to qualified professionals.

Daily Car Blog recommends that motorists familiarise themselves with their vehicle’s handbook and carry out regular maintenance checks to help identify potential problems early.

The findings underline the importance of routine vehicle checks, helping drivers stay safer on the road while potentially avoiding preventable breakdowns and costly repairs.
