Max Being Max: Verstappen Under Investigation After GT3 Clash At Portimão
Formula One

Max Verstappen has come under investigation by race stewards following a collision during opening practice for the GT World Challenge season finale at Portimão, Portugal.

The four-time Formula 1 world champion made contact with the #25 Audi during the early stages of FP1, sending the rival car spinning around to face his Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Onboard footage showed Verstappen raising his hand in frustration following the incident, which is now being reviewed by officials ahead of the second practice session.

Verstappen is competing alongside Ben Barnicoat and Chris Lulham in the #3 Mercedes, with the Dutchman completing most of the running during Friday’s session. The crew finished 20th in the classification.

His appearance in Portugal comes after a calendar clash forced regular Verstappen Racing drivers Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon to prioritise the World Endurance Championship round in Barcelona.

Verstappen is expected to expand his endurance racing programme in 2027, with another assault on the Nürburgring 24 Hours anticipated, alongside a potential outing at the Spa 24 Hours. A Bathurst 12 Hour appearance, however, is considered unlikely.

The stewards’ investigation adds an early complication to Verstappen’s weekend as he targets another strong result away from Formula 1.
