Volkswagen Hits The Brakes On Electric Golf As Cost Pressures Mount
Industry News

Volkswagen’s electric Golf has hit an unexpected speed bump, with the German car giant suspending development work at its Wolfsburg headquarters as it struggles to meet increasingly demanding cost-cutting targets.

The decision is an uncomfortable one for VW, particularly given the Golf’s importance to the brand and its hometown factory.

Thomas Schaefer, head of Volkswagen’s volume brands, admitted in an internal memo that the company simply couldn’t afford to continue the work right now. Wolfsburg is reportedly €300 million short of its savings target.

The pause comes as VW Group battles falling demand, fierce Chinese competition and a mammoth restructuring programme involving plans to cut 100,000 jobs and potentially close up to four German factories.

The company recently reported a staggering €5.9 billion operating loss for the third quarter, its biggest quarterly deficit in almost a decade.

The electric Golf, expected to wear the ID Golf name, is planned for a 2030 launch and will use Volkswagen’s next-generation SSP architecture.

Despite the development freeze, the company’s works council insists the delay won’t affect that launch date, promising to make up the lost time.

Meanwhile, production of the current combustion-powered Golf is scheduled to move to Mexico in 2027.

For now, Wolfsburg isn’t facing closure. But with billions disappearing from the balance sheet, even one of Volkswagen’s most important nameplates isn’t immune from the financial reality check.
