The Lexus GX 550 is already a fairly imposing thing. It looks like it could climb a mountain, frighten a small village and tow a house without breaking a sweat.

But apparently, that wasn’t quite enough for Mountain Yotas, which has turned up at this year’s SEMA Show with the gloriously excessive MTN 550 Recon.

And excessive really is the word. The biggest talking point is a set of custom black anodised 74Weld portal axles, which lift the vehicle considerably and give it the sort of ground clearance usually associated with military hardware.

Add Fox Live Valve suspension, billet control arms and enormous 40-inch Mickey Thompson tyres wrapped around forged beadlock wheels, and you’ve got something that looks positively indestructible.

There’s also a front differential locker working alongside the GX’s standard centre and rear locking differentials. Steel skid plates, rock sliders, bespoke bumpers and a Warn EVO winch ensure that when the going gets tough, the Recon isn’t going to start whimpering.

Then there’s the equipment list. Stainless steel snorkels, a roof-mounted light show, thermal cameras and even ballistic-armoured door panels. Because apparently, a muddy weekend in the countryside might involve an ambush.

Underneath all this hardware sits the familiar twin-turbocharged 3.4-litre V6. Mountain Yotas hasn’t fiddled with its internals, but has fitted a custom side-exit stainless steel exhaust. Sensible, perhaps, but undoubtedly rather loud.

Inside, things are considerably more civilised. Italian leather, Alcantara, red stitching, a starlight headliner and a bespoke overhead control console give the cabin an unmistakably luxurious feel.

The MTN 550 Recon is utterly ridiculous, gloriously overengineered and almost certainly more capable than most owners will ever need. Naturally, we rather love it.
