Chinese Battery maker CATL unveiled its new 5C ultra-fast charging long-life battery. The company claims the battery retains 80% capacity after 3,000 full charge cycles, equivalent to about 1.8 million kilometers, roughly six times the industry average.
Even under extreme heat (60°C), it maintains 80% capacity after 1,400 cycles, or around 840,000 km. The 5C rating allows a full charge in roughly 12 minutes, putting it in the ultra-fast charging category.
CATL credits the extended cycle life to three key innovations: a denser, uniform cathode coating, a proprietary electrolyte additive that repairs microcracks, and a temperature-responsive separator coating that slows ion migration to reduce thermal risks.
The upgraded battery management system also improves thermal consistency by directing coolant to hotspots, enhancing lifespan and usability.
CATL began developing ultra-fast batteries in 2020 and released its first-generation 4C Qilin battery in 2023.
The 5C battery targets applications with high-frequency usage, such as electric trucks, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles, aiming to reduce total lifecycle costs.
Mass-production plans and initial vehicle applications have not yet been announced, though early adoption is expected in high-end passenger or commercial
