Dr Helmut Marko, Former F1 Romper Stomper, Appointed Ambassador For Austrian Grand Prix

Former F1 paddock “romper-stomper” turned retiree and now a civilian, Dr. Helmut Marko—née “Mad Dog Marko”—is set to take up an ambassadorial role at the Austrian Grand Prix. When he left F1, I retired the “Mad Dog” tag too—mainly because I was the only one using it. Still, the sport is poorer without his meat-grinder opinions, delivered with all the subtlety of a concrete slab from above.

Truth is, F1 doesn’t miss him—I do. I never met the man and never will, but in his heyday he was compulsive viewing. Back then, his opinions ripped things apart. Now? Even before Dr Marko rose to prominence, the paddock was becoming sanitised—drivers media-trained into bland, risk-free soundbites.

This is what modern F1 has become: polished, professionalised, and tightly managed to keep sponsors comfortable. Marko came from a different era—one where speaking your mind wasn’t a liability.

Which is why this neat, corporate ambassador role, complete with its polite restraints, sits so awkwardly against the blunt-force style that made him compelling and equally notorious in the first place.

But Dr Marko’s opinions remain highly valued, and away from the media-driven headline spectacle, his insight is still prized—as Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies noted in a recent media interview.

“Helmut has remained very open and available to us. I am [talking to him], they are, I’m sure we are all having chats with him and getting guidance from him, even though you don’t see him turning up at the racetrack.”

“You can’t turn the page of Helmut that has been building this young driver programme for two decades with incredible success. You don’t turn that page quickly. So we are living on his legacy right now, and as I said, he’s behind the corners if we need him.”
