Land Rover Didn’t Have The Spare Cash To Make An Electric Freelander, So They Asked China For Help
Auto News

Jaguar Land Rover’s Chinese joint venture clearly thinks screens can solve just about anything. Meet the Freelander 8, a full-size range-extender SUV that’s less interested in off-roading and more concerned with turning your daily commute into an IMAX experience.

Ahead of its launch in the second half of 2026, Chery Jaguar Land Rover has lifted the lid on the Freelander 8’s headline act: a colossal 46.3-inch, 8K display stretching 1.2 metres across the dashboard.

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8397 automotive chip, it runs what the company calls a “cinematic” interface, complete with immersive themes, AI features and enough modes to rival a Swiss Army knife.

Fancy a cinema, camping, children’s or pet mode? It’s all there, alongside seat massage, zero-gravity recliners, fragrance controls and even one-touch folding for the third row.

The Freelander 8 itself is hardly subtle. Measuring over 5.1 metres long with a six-seat 2+2+2 layout, it’s built to haul both people and toys, offering a 2,000kg towing capacity.

Under the skin sits an 800V electrical architecture, a 60.3kWh CATL battery good for 221km of WLTC electric range, and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine acting as a range extender.

Topping off the tech stack is Huawei’s ADS 4.1 assisted-driving system, complete with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

The Freelander 8 also marks a new direction for Chery Jaguar Land Rover as it pivots away from discounted legacy models towards a China-first electric future. Judging by the amount of technology packed into this thing, the company isn’t just trying to build another SUV—it wants to build the living room you’ll drive to work in.
