Toto Wolff has experienced firsthand how dangerous an internal championship fight can become. As Mercedes team principal, he oversaw four intense seasons of rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg — a battle that eventually delivered titles but also created deep tension within the team.
Now, with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell potentially emerging as title contenders for Mercedes, Wolff is determined not to allow history to repeat itself.
Hamilton and Rosberg began their Mercedes partnership as close friends, having raced together since their junior careers. Their early years as teammates were competitive but manageable, with Hamilton coming out on top in 2013 before securing back-to-back championships in 2014 and 2015.
However, as the stakes increased, so did the friction. By 2016, their rivalry had become increasingly intense, leading to on-track clashes, threats of team intervention, and a growing divide between the two sides of the Mercedes garage. Rosberg ultimately won the championship, but their friendship had been damaged beyond repair.
Wolff says he will not allow a similar situation to develop between Antonelli and Russell.
“I will not allow it,” Wolff said Wolff in a recent media interview. “That’s never going to happen to me again. That’s never going to happen to the team again. Simple. I’m just taking a driver out if he does that.”
The possibility of an Antonelli-Russell title battle remains very real, although Mercedes’ reliability issues have complicated Russell’s season. The Briton started the year as the expected championship challenger, but a series of setbacks have cost him crucial points.
Russell suffered a battery failure in Canada, received a controversial penalty in Monaco, crashed at Spa after a power-related issue, and recently experienced an anti-stall problem at the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Antonelli has also faced his own challenges, including an engine failure in Barcelona and a damaged wheel shield at Silverstone. Despite those setbacks, he has maintained stronger momentum and currently leads Russell by 69 points midway through the season.
Wolff believes Russell’s struggles have been made worse by the pressure that came with being viewed as the favourite.
“George was in the lead in Montreal, and then he DNF’d,” Wolff said. “So that could have been another win for him, and certainly it would have put him in a better frame of mind for the races to come.”
The Mercedes boss also highlighted how quickly expectations can change in Formula 1.
“Kimi had nine races without a point last year, then Kimi is very good this year. And suddenly, the kind of expectations change, and you’re a little bit on the back foot,” Wolff explained.
Despite Russell’s difficult run, Wolff remains confident in his ability to respond under pressure.
“If there is someone on the back foot that can manage that, it’s George, because he’s a hard guy,” he said. “The best ones, they are able to turn things around. So I think he can, absolutely.”
For Mercedes, the challenge is finding the right balance: encouraging fierce competition while preventing the rivalry from becoming destructive. Wolff knows that a strong driver battle can push a team forward — but an internal conflict can tear it apart.
The message from the Mercedes leadership is clear: Antonelli and Russell are free to fight for victory, but the team will not tolerate a rivalry that threatens its championship ambitions.
