BMW Plans Model Range Cuts As Neue Klasse Investment Accelerates
Auto News

BMW is reportedly preparing to reduce its model range as the company focuses investment and engineering resources on its Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform.

According to Automotive News Europe, BMW plans to concentrate its future portfolio on fewer than 40 models, with several existing vehicles approaching the end of production. The move is intended to reduce complexity and free resources during a costly transition towards next-generation electric vehicles.

The 8 Series is among the most prominent casualties. Production of the coupe and Gran Coupe has ended, with no direct successor currently planned. The models were based on an older 5 Series platform, making further investment increasingly difficult to justify.

BMW’s XM plug-in hybrid SUV is also reportedly scheduled to end production in 2028. The model recorded 7,608 global sales last year and 2,816 during the first half of 2026. An electric iXM has reportedly been considered as a potential replacement.

The i4 is expected to be phased out as BMW’s Neue Klasse-based i3 takes over its position within the electric range. The 2 Series Active Tourer is also reportedly being discontinued, further reducing BMW’s conventional passenger-car offering.

The changes reflect BMW’s wider strategy to prioritise its next generation of electric vehicles while controlling costs and reducing portfolio complexity.

BMW has not officially confirmed the reported timings, meaning individual models and production plans could still change.

However, the direction is clear: as investment in Neue Klasse accelerates, BMW appears increasingly willing to sacrifice slower-selling and ageing models to concentrate resources on the vehicles it believes will define its future.
