Talent Was Never the Problem
Esteban Ocon’s departure from Haas at the end of 2026 marks the end of a turbulent partnership that promised much but ultimately failed to deliver consistently. Despite arriving with race-winning experience and an impressive Formula 1 résumé, Ocon struggled to establish the sustained performance and internal harmony the American team expected.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu initially believed their previous working relationship would help smooth the transition. However, concerns reportedly grew over Ocon’s reaction to disappointing results, with complaints about car performance, technical inconsistencies and setup decisions increasingly testing the patience of those around him.
Bearman Raises the Bar
Ocon’s relationship with teammate Oliver Bearman has remained largely constructive, despite on-track clashes at the 2025 British Grand Prix and Spa in 2026. Yet the younger Briton’s performances have increasingly strengthened his position within the team.
While Ocon has demonstrated his quality in flashes, including an impressive points-scoring drive in Baku, Haas reportedly became frustrated by his inconsistency and what it perceived as a reluctance to accept responsibility when things went wrong.
The situation reportedly reached a turning point after the summer break, when Komatsu indicated that Ocon’s future beyond 2026 was uncertain. Financial considerations also played a role, with Haas questioning whether his salary represented sufficient value for a team operating with limited resources.
Câmara Emerges as the Future
Haas has not lacked alternatives. Toyota-backed Ryo Hirakawa and other promising young drivers have reportedly been evaluated, but Ferrari junior Rafa Câmara is understood to have made a particularly strong impression during testing.
His outright pace, professional approach and commercial backing have reportedly strengthened his candidacy for a 2027 seat alongside Bearman.
For Ocon, the outlook is less encouraging. With few vacancies expected across the grid, the Frenchman could find himself facing a season on the sidelines despite his race-winning credentials.
Ultimately, this reported split illustrates Formula 1’s unforgiving reality: experience and talent count for little when results, finances and team confidence fail to align.
For Haas, the future appears to belong to youth. For Ocon, the fight to remain on the grid may be entering its toughest chapter yet.
