MercBenzKing has finally made it to America, joining his Motor Classic friends for a well-timed jaunt to the Empire, where apparently the word “freedom” is enough to convince people they’re living in a functioning democracy. A rather convenient interpretation of reality.

MercBenzKing remains one of YouTube’s most awkward presenters. You’d think that by now he’d have made some effort to move beyond his trademark rabbit-in-the-headlights delivery, but apparently not. Perhaps that’s the secret to his channel’s success: an almost unrivalled ability to make every appearance look like an uncomfortable first day on the job.

Every sentence, every face-to-camera moment, seems to reinforce the impression of someone desperately trying to look comfortable while being hopelessly out of his depth.

There’s an almost fascinating disconnect between the confidence required to run a YouTube channel and the apparent discomfort he displays when actually presenting. Of course, perhaps that’s just my observation.

Maybe I’m completely wrong. Perhaps his subscribers see a suave, sophisticated and naturally charismatic presenter. It’s entirely possible we’re watching two very different channels.

Or perhaps the awkwardness is all an elaborate act. Maybe MercBenzKing is actually a remarkably talented performer, deliberately cultivating an uncomfortable on-screen persona. If so, it’s certainly a commitment to the role.

One thing, however, is beyond question: the name. MercBenzKing. There’s something quite extraordinary about bestowing such a grand title upon oneself.

It suggests a rather generous assessment of one’s own importance. King is quite a claim to make, particularly when the presentation itself struggles to command the room.

Then again, perhaps there’s a master plan at work. Maybe there’s more going on than meets the eye. Whatever the ambition, the endgame remains as mysterious as ever.
