You may not be old enough to remember the Lada, it was built under Soviet era Russia and like much of Russia during the communist era, if you scratched away at the surface there was little to be found underneath.
Living under a one party one vote system meant your choice of cars was equally and ruthlessly limited, which is why the Lada became popular in Russia and its eastern block allies.
Production began in 1966 and ended as recently as 2012 with over 20 million units sold. You have got to hand it to Russian society they are loyal to their motherland.
But when times are tough Lada owners will do anything to keep on the road.
