The additional use of carbon fiber for the R8’s firewall and B-pillars should result in a weight saving of around 100kg.
Sadly the normally aspirated V10 engine may become sidelined in favor of a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 currently used in the Audi RS6 and RS7 although Audi will tune it specifically for the R8 to produce more bang for its buck. Around 600bhp is the asking price.
Quite possibly a hybrid version is also on the cards although Audi have yet to confirm this. The R8 will share the new TT’s digital instrument binnacle which also combines the infotainment system.
The six speed manual gearbox is said to be fading into the past and the R8 will use in its place a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
Overall judging by these images the R8 will be an evolutionary update regarding the exterior design, but most of the underlying mechanicals will be significantly upgraded.
