Ferrari 488 GTB Seen But Not Heard
Auto News
Ferrari have revealed the twin-turbo derivative / replacement of the 458 Italia, the 488 GTB. We expected Ferrari to reveal the 488 GTB later on in the day at the PR golden release time of 17:00hrs but to our surprise they early just as we posted the 488 teaser video. #whatever. Ferrari-459-Itali-GTB-Front The 3.9-litre V8 twin-turbo engine replaces the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 and although its a sad farewell in return you do get a bucket load of power which now increases from 562bhp too 661bhp and 760Nm of torque. If you consider the Ferrari 599 GTO had a naturally aspirated, 6.0-litre V12 which produced 661bhp then you can see the power advantages associated with turbo-charging. Performance figures are said to equate to that of the 458 Italia Speciale, 0-62 takes 3.0 seconds but its nearly 1 second faster to 0-124mph at 8.3 seconds and the top speed is a reputed 208mph. The 488 GTB is also faster around Ferrari’s Fiorano track than the Enzo, 2 seconds faster. Ferrari-459-Itali-GTB-Profile The outgoing 458 Italia revved up to 9,000 rpm the 488 GTB delivers peak power at 8,000 rpm so expect a slightly less louder but loud enough ethereal scream from this forced induction version. Ferrari are promising an engine note that is “that is full, clear and totally distinctive”. We just shrugged our shoulders and said, “thats-a-good”. Driver technology includes an evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 – SSC2) is more precise and less invasive. Aside from integrating with the car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable. The car’s aerodynamics sets a new record for a production Ferrari, the 488 GTB generates 50 per cent more downforce than the previous model and drag has also been reduced. Ferrari-459-Itali-GTB-Rear Those side mounted air-intakes hark back to the original 308 GTB but also improve thermal efficiency to the radiators. Pricing has yet to be revealed, Ferrari punters won’t care too much though they will pay what ever it costs to get their hands on the 488 GTB. Ferrari 488 GTB Technical specifications ENGINE
