Whenever a news publication uses the term “inside sources” it’s another way to say the news is being made up on the spot to fill column inches.
However BMW has confirmed that the i8 Spyder isn’t at the top of their to-do list and is busy making a rival to the Tesla model S, likely to called the i5.
BMW have also stated that the i8 is selling well enough and that an i8 Spyder is not necessarily needed right now.
Like any car manufacture BMW will always decline to say what it is doing at any given time. Reading between the lines it may well be that the i8 Spyder will go into production by 2017 or 2018 at the latest.
