Don’t Mess With Skippy The Thug Kangaroo

Skippy The Bush Kangaroo was a typically bizarre 20th Century TV series to give an animal-human characteristics. Think Lassie, The Littlest Hobo, Gentle Ben or Mr Ed. The 30 minute episodes featured Skippy getting into and out of scrapes, this little bush-whacker had far more intelligence than his human co-stars.

Skippy was a resident of some jerk water town in Australia and along with his pre-teen co-star Skippy would help save the day. Skippy could do anything and could do nothing wrong.

But in reality, trying to humanise a Kangaroo is like a Kangaroo trying to turn you or I into an animal.

Amazingly 90 episodes were produced between 1969 and 1972. Once the programme ended Skippy became typecast and found it difficult to get more jobs.

Skippy even went to Hollywood but found work difficult to find and to pay his stay would either waiter at fast food restaurant or porter.

Disillusioned by constant rejection from other film studio’s Skippy eventually returned to OZ, turned to drink and fell out of the public spotlight.

That is until he was found wondering in another part of jerk water Australia late at night. Unfortunately, Skippy became angry over the years and saw his human entrapment as a curse.

That is why Skippy was filmed attacking this ‘ute’ owing Aussie’s ‘ute’, Skippy is a racist Kangaroo and hates all white Australians especially white TV execs.

In his auto-biography Skippy did concede he was treated better than the Aborigines but will always feel he was used.
