Porsche, Mercedes… You’re Banned, Totally Banned From Switzerland
Industry News

Porsche and Mercedes executives in Switzerland woke up this morning to the news of being banned by the Swiss government from selling newly registered vehicles. The ban is specific and targets the Porsche Cayman and Macan SUVs. Mercedes faces a ban from selling the Vito van.

So why are Swiss authorities banning the sale of these specific cars? for Porsche, which is owned by VW, the ban relates to dieselgate. If you need reminding in 2015 dieselgate uncovered deceptive techniques implemented by VW that were designed to defraud emissions regulators. VW used deceptive techniques to fool US emissions regulators that their diesel cars were far less polluting than officially stated. Meanwhile, VW continued to market their diesel cars as the cleanest and most advanced in a bid to sell more cars into the lucrative the U.S. market. VW has spent heavily investing on diesel engine technology and wanted to recoup the billions spent at the expense of public health. Some 11 million cars were affected. It appears BMW and Mercedes applied the same techniques, indeed it may well be the case that all three German giants colluded into sharing the spoils of the U.S. market. The Swiss ban will affect vehicles imported into the country from Aug 17 and targets Vito vans with the 1.6-litre diesel engines. Porsche Macan and Cayman models sold with 3.0-litre and 4.2-litre diesel engines will be targeted by Swiss authorities, despite both engines being Euro 6 compliant. In May German authorities ordered a recall and halt of new Vito registrations. Audi has also been targeted by the Swiss, A6, A7 models with the same 3.0-litre and 4.2-litre engines built and sold before 2018 are also facing a ban.  Porsche, mercedes banned from selling vehicles in Switzerland
